Greetings and Happy New Year!

Jonatas Campelo and Jamie Andreson are thrilled to invite you to our first artistic residency in the United States, hosted by our partner organization the Ark Project, located in West Oakland, California. We had the pleasure of hosting the Ark Project’s residency Invisible Light at our House of Sustainable Arts (CAS – Casa de Artes Sustentáveis) in Salvador, Brazil in July 2018. In exchange, the Ark Project is now producing a residency with Brazilian circus performer Jonatas Campelo to continue this international artistic and cultural exchange and present his Capvara Clown for the first time to a Bay Area audience.

The residency photo exhibition will open on Friday February 8th with a circus variety show featuring acts by Capvara the Clown at 8 pm (sliding scale admission $5-10). On Saturday and Sunday from 2 – 4pm Jonatas Campelo will facilitate his Workshop, “Awakening your Clown”, an immersion into the art of the Clown through self-reflexivity, ridiculous play, scenic movements, and classic Brazilian acts. Jonatas Campelo has administered this workshop at national circus conventions in Brazil, institutions of higher education and public schools for the past five years. The financial contribution for both days of participating in the workshop is $100, intended for anyone interested in learning more about the art of clowning and developing their craft. The residency will also include a photo exhibit of our CIRCAS show, produced monthly at the House of Sustainable Arts (referred to as CAS in Brazil, hence the name “CIRCAS”) with all pieces for sale. All proceeds from the event will go to support the artistic productions of Capvara the Clown and the programming of the House of Sustainable Arts.

  • Friday February 8 at 8 pm: Capvara Variety Show ($5-10 sliding scale)

  • Saturday & Sunday February 9 & 10 from 2 – 4 pm: Workshop – Awakening your Clown ($100)

  • Friday, Saturday and Sunday February 8 - 10 from 4 – 8 pm: CIRCAS Photo exhibit (pieces on sale)

This initiative is the first of many to build our program of international artistic residencies and bi-national exchange between Brazilian and U.S. based artists. The House of Sustainable Arts was founded by Jonatas and Jamie in 2017 to provide cultural programming to the local community of Bahian-based artists and to offer an immersive experience to international visitors interested in experiencing the cultural and historical depth of the city of Salvador. We have hosted artists from around the world, especially from North, Central and South America and our mission is to provide the comfort, guidance and infrastructure to help artists experience the artistic richness of Salvador and contribute to the local community in the form of exhibits, classes, workshops and shows. In exchange, we are hoping to bring more Brazilian artists to showcase their work in the United States and are seeking individual artists, collectives and groups who are interested in participating in this initiative.

We thank you for your support and request your help in sharing this announcement in your personal and professional networks. Advanced tickets and registration for the workshop are available through our e-mail, casresidencia@gmail.com . Your advanced purchase and donations will help invest in the infrastructure for the show. We accept multiple forms of payment including Venmo, Paypal, Zelle transfers, cash and personal checks by mail.
